Amsterdam is one of the most unusual cities in Europe, built entirely on piles. It was built on the shores of the saltwater Zuiderzee , but as a result of centuries of land reclamation, the city now borders the fresh water Ijsselmeer. Traditionally, when we think of Netherlands, windmills, wooden shoes, wondrous flowers and bicycles come to mind. While these things probably always go hand in hand with dutch traditions and landscape, one of the lesser known facts is that it holds an important economic position in Europe as one of the founding members of the European Union. There are about 1000 working windmills that are functioning the same way they did centuries ago. Wooden shoes sold in souvenir shops have come to symbolize the dutch farmer, though the farmers themselves seldom wear it these days. Wondrous flowers are still in generous supply, spanning about 70 acres, the Keukenhof in Lisse is the most famous and biggest bulb show in the world. Bicycles are the most common mode of transport - there are more than twice as many bicycles as cars!.
The main tourist sites in Amsterdam are canals, museums and art galleries. Some of the interesting places are:
