Berlin, Germany

brandenburg_gate Visit Berlin, although eons apart, the modern city of Berlin and the ancient city of Jericho shares a common occurrence - both their walls came tumbling down. Berlin wall fell on November 9, 1989, 28 years after it was built. Berlin is the capital of new Germany. Berlin is located northeastern Germany on rivers Spree and Havel, completely surrounded by the German federal state of Brandenburg. The city centre lies along the river Spree in the Berlin-Warsaw 'urstromtal' (ancient river valley), formed by water flowing from melting ice sheets at the end of the last Ice Age. The urstromtal lies between the low plateaus of the Barnim, to the north, and the Teltow, to the south. In Berlin's westernmost borough, Spandau, the Spree meets the river Havel, which flows from north to south through western Berlin. The course of the Havel is much like a chain of lakes. The largest lakes along the Havel are the Tegelsee and Großer Wannsee. A series of lakes also feeds into the upper Spree, which flows through eastern Berlin's largest lake, Großer Müggelsee. Kurfürstendamm, Berlin's preferred promenade, known widely as the Ku'damm, for luxury hotels, stores and nightclubs. Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhem-Gedachtniskirche) has been preserved as a poignant ruin. National Gallery, devoted to 19th and 20th century art, in a plain, glass-walled building. Tiergarten, a large beautiful public park with charming lakes. Dahlem museums contains the painting gallery displaying 13th and 18th century European paintings and ethonographic collections and sculptures. Brandenburg Gate, serves as the supreme symbol of the city and has been restored after the unification. VyomTravels offers cheap bargain airfares to Berlin from all cities in USA.

Places of Interest

Long before its cars, cameras and electronic devices conquered world markets, Germany was exporting ideas. Earth-shakers like Martin Luther, Karl Marx and Albert Einstein came from the same intellectual melting pot as Goethe, Heine and Thomas Man; Bach, Beethoven and Wagner need no translators. Germany can trace its prehistory back about half a million years, right down to the jawbone of Heidelberg Man, which today is a university town bearing the same name. Boosted by the fall of the wall, Berlin is twice as populous, vibrant and forward-looking than ever in its artistic, intellectual and economic activity, a fitting capital for the new Germany. One of the first things visitors should do on arrival in Berlin is to acquaint themselves with the city's phenomenal fast-train system - the S-Bahn("S" is for schnell - fast) and U-Bahn (underground train or subway) . The S-Bahn and U-Bahn systems are augmented by trams and buses. By air, Tegel, Tempelhof and Schonefeld airports are connected with the city center by buses and trains.
