Bucharest, Romania

Triumphal Arch Visit Bucharest, the capital of Romania . Romania's fame as "The Breadbasket of Europe" obscures the rich variety of this country, whose name and Latin language reflect its origins as an outpost of the Roman Empire. If the fields, orchards and vineyards of the plains are prodigal with grain, fruits and wine, the forested mountains, rising to nearly 10,000 feet in the Southern Carpathians, are laced with hiking trails and ski runs; the ethnic Hungarian and German villages in the rolling hills and meadows of Transylvania preserve the costumes and customs of a bygone age, and the watery maze of the vast Danube River Delta contains one of the greatest concentrations of birdlife.Bucharest's picturesque boulevards are tree-lined and surrounded by buildings of grandiose architecture. The city supposedly got its name from a shepherd called "bucur", whose flute playing ability along with his impressive vineyard prompted the local farmers to name the city after him. Bucharest was redesigned in the 19th century by french architects giving the city a french touch, exemplified by "The Triumphal Arch" which is similar to Paris's famed Champs-Elysees. "The Palace of Parliament" stands reminiscent of the bygone communist era is one of the largest buildings in the world, second only to the Pentagon in USA. VyomTravels offers cheap online bargain airfares to Bucharest from all cities in USA.

Places of Interest

The Danube rolls for a many hundreds of miles in Romania, rushing through narrow, steep-walled canyons and meandering past villages and castles on its way to the Black Sea. Visitors can see a cross section of the whole country in comfort aboard a Danube cruise ship. Romania's coast became a sort of Socialist Miami Beach under the dictator Ceaucescu, whose regime came to an end in 1990. The regime's neglect of rural areas had the effect of leaving intact landscapes of great beauty and villages of an antiquated charm.

The Roman rule ended in 2nd century AD but there are ruins to be seen, along with unusual mix of monuments, from Turkish minarets to the medieval streets of old Brasov, and from the Orthodox monsteries of Bukovina, beautifully decorated with frescoes on the outside walls. There are several castles pointed out as "Count Dracula's" despite the fact that Dracula was the invention of a 19th century British novelist. Bucharest as Romania's largest city has a lot to offer in terms of tourist attraction, some are:

  • Triumphal Arch - built in ancient Roman style commemorating World War I
  • Romanian Atheneum - neo classic Opera house from late 19th century
  • Art Museum - houses 70,000 works of art from many Romanian and International artists
  • Excursion to Mogosoaia - colonaded 17th century palace
  • Herastrau Park
  • Baneasa Forest and Zoo
  • Palace of Parliament
  • History Museum - Exhibits trace the history of Romania back to prehistoric times
  • Village Museum - More than 70 buildings of varied Romanian styles set in large park dotted with lakes
